According to Geertz, the symbols for reality that are offered by a reli- gion as a cultural system produce pervasive and long-lasting motiva- tions that cause people to act. But these actions are not necessarily in harmony with religous scripture.

Religious symbols as part of such a cultural system serve a particular function, as they convey a direct connection between our worldview and ethos; how we perceive the world and how we live according.
